An online bathroom retailer have discovered that the bathroom is one of the favourite rooms within the home as Britons can get some peace and quiet whilst n there.

The team at ukBathrooms.com conducted the study as part of ongoing research in to how Britons interact with different rooms within their homes. A total of 2,041 British stay-at-home parents, all of whom stated they rented or owned their own home and had at least one child in the household, were quizzed about the rooms within their home and which rooms they prefer to spend the most amount of time.

Initially all respondents were asked ‘What’s your favourite room in your house?’ to which the most popular rooms appeared to be ‘the kitchen’ (34%), ‘the bedroom’ (27%) and ‘the bathroom’ (24%). According to the survey, 57% of respondents who chose the kitchen as their favourite room in their home say it’s because it’s ‘the ideal room in the house for entertaining and where everyone naturally congregates’. Similarly, 45% of respondents who chose the bedroom as their favourite room stated it was because ‘time in the bedroom signalled wind-down time for the day’ and 68% of those who stated the bathroom was their favourite room admitted it was because it’s ‘the only room in the house where you can get total peace and quiet’.

All those who stated they love their bathroom as it allows peace and quiet were asked to expand on this. The most common responses were ‘no one disturbs each other when they’re in the bathroom (32%) and ‘Having a bath is a luxury reserved for when the children are asleep and the house is quiet’ (31%). All respondents were asked if they ever went in to the bathroom for a few minutes peace and quiet, to which 83% of admitted that ‘yes’ they did.

Following on from this, all respondents were asked to state roughly how long they spent relaxing in each room within their home in order to determine if respondents favourite rooms within their homes were the rooms most used. Once all of the results were collated, the results showed that the top 5 most relaxing rooms in the home, according to the amount of time spent relaxing in them, were as follows:

1. The living room – 6 hours and 49 minutes (per day)

2. The kitchen – 3 hours and 17 minutes

3. The bedroom – 2 hours and 50 minutes

4. The bathroom – 1 hour 41 minutes

5. The back garden – 52 minutes

According to the poll, 89% of respondents admit to regularly being interrupted whilst trying to relax throughout the day, with ‘children’ (40%), ‘partners’ (31%) and ‘neighbours’ (16%) being the worst culprits. When asked how they felt when constantly interrupted, 17% admitted they didn’t mind, with almost two thirds, 64% admitted it frustrated them.

Peter Gregg, Director of UK Bathrooms commented:

“We’re a little shocked that so many parents admit to popping in to the bathroom just to get some peace and quiet, whether it’s from their children, their partners or even their neighbours. It’s hard being a stay-at-home parent when you don’t get as much adult companionship as you would if you went back to work, or you don’t get the solitude that you desire until everyone’s in bed – but it is one of the most rewarding things that a person can do.”
