Last year we reviewed the best battery powered lawnmowers for large gardens. This year we’ve reviewed just one for a small garden, quite possibly, unfairly, comparing it to the Cobra and GTech along the way.

The Hayter Hawk 43 AD 60v battery powered lawnmower would have to impress in order for us to put aside the other two for garden tasks. At a lower price point it had a lot to live up to and at first glance we weren’t completely sure it would succeed.

Assembly

This is the easiest lawnmower we’ve ever put together. It was ready in minutes and took no special skills or tools, almost good to go out of the box. This was a pleasant surprise and saved a lot of time.

Safety

There may be no wires to worry about, or no leaking petrol but a 60v lawnmower is still a dangerous piece of kit in the wrong hands. This is why we loved the safety key that has to be inserted before the lawnmower will start. This is a great feature and one other battery powered lawnmowers should consider.

Battery

At 60v the lawnmower has 50% more power than the ones we reviewed last year despite being marketed for small gardens. This power was obvious when cutting grass that had grown freely during no mow May. The others would have blocked and struggled yet the Hayter powered through, again saving a lot of time and effort. We were starting to fall in love.

The battery also lasted for as long as needed and the garden we used it on really isn’t that small. Out of a full charge we could cut the grass twice.

Finish

The Hayter has rollers like the Gtech but unlike the Cobra which allow you to create those lovely looking lines. Unfortunately our lawn has a whopping great Willow tree plus roots in the middle so this is impossible but it was nice to know this was a feature.

Ease of Use

A bug bear previously has been the manual labour involved in changing the height of the blades. The Hayter makes it simple. You can choose your grass height to the nearest millimetre with ease.

Weight

The self propelled function makes light work of uneven ground and uphill mowing. You can choose between the tortoise or the hare for some relaxed or frenzied mowing.

Size and Storage

This is the only negative, it’s a little bigger than others and so a little harder to manoeuvre round corners while taking up more space in the barn. With all the other great features though this is a small sacrifice to make. The website says it can be stored vertically, so we will try that. It’s currently upside down!

In Summary

The Hayter battery powered lawnmower is the best battery powered lawnmower for small gardens. You won’t find better and if you think you have, let us know.

Update One Year Later

Somehow, we lost the starter key for the Hayter Hawk, it’s quite easy to lose, small and red plastic. This renders the whole lawnmower unusable and when we reached out to Hayter they were not very helpful. Found a lawnmower supplier (they recommended) who stocks it – there are not many of them – and he asked for our debit card details via email which sounded a bit weird. We still have no starter key, it’s impossible to find and Hayter won’t help. It’s odd. Usually when a part goes missing and it’s under a year the manufacturer will send one out, albeit with a cost. This is a strange going on and one to be aware of should you need blades, a starter key, new battery, charger etc.

The Review

Hayter Hawk 43

4.7 Score

A powerful mower that makes short work of tricky tasks, easy to assemble and easy to use, it makes the garden look primped and pruned
