The garden is often the perfect environment to welcome new guests to your house. So it’s important that you have all your bases covered, especially when it comes to aesthetic features.

An attractive garden fence doesn’t just enhance the look of your personal outdoor space, but also your entire home. Aside from giving you the privacy and security you need, a garden fence offers a more satisfying curb appeal. Just like how gardeners take care of their plants, putting a premium on a garden fence welcomes a bevy of practical and aesthetic benefits. And yes, it may sound like a bit of a trivial topic, but please indulge us a little while we run through why you should take pride in your garden fence.

Do It Yourself highlights the advantages of having a new fence in the backyard. The article also shows the many types, as well as the pros and cons of some more popular materials. It also highlights how, if you choose durable materials they will stave off decomposition, and won’t be impacted by insects and rot.

The benefits

Firstly, it is important to recognise the other benefits and factors of having gardening fencing. Other than obvious reasons of solitude and safety, Screwfix also points out how a garden fence alters the appearance of your outdoor area. It gives a unique – not to mention colourful – focal point to the home. From the retailer’s array of contemporary garden fences it’s evident that many manufacturers have placed an importance on the aesthetics of today’s fences – bringing stylish new design features to the fore. However, this doesn’t mean they haven’t been built with any less care, as the majority now come with 15-year guarantees.

Paint

Paint, as most of you know by now, has a way of preserving various materials for years. This includes outdoor fences. The coating repels moisture from entering and damaging its materials, which is why it is also imperative to look for and use a paint that has such features. When it comes to the frequency, however, everything depends on the weather. For instance, regions with frequent rain will need to be re-painted regularly and/or staining, while generally dry localities require less care.

As a rule of thumb, DIY Network suggests re-painting fences once every two or three years. Another deciding factor is to look for beading, or those little knots that can be harmful to wood in the long-term. If water no longer beads up on the fence, then perhaps it is the ideal time to give it a retouch.

In terms of choosing paint or staining agents, the decision boils down to your personal preference. However, even though most of them provide supreme protection from natural and damaging elements, there are still a few things to think about. On one hand, painting is the cheaper option of the two, yet requires more recurrent preservation. The initial cost of staining, on the flipside, is steeper, but at the end of it all, it is better absorbed on wooden fences.

In order to give new meaning to a garden fence, it all starts and ends with the right maintenance. You should always place importance on fencing, the same way you invest time in your plants and other garden design features. Ultimately, from preparation, to building, to sustaining, the idea of outdoor fencing adds a different kind of dynamic to your garden.
