New Ways to Use Chalkboard Paint for Organisation

Thought chalkboard paint was out? Think again

Before you start, invest in some good chalkboard markers. We recommend Posca (no affiliation) and the chalkboard paint we recommend is Rustoleum (again no affiliation but a review of their floor paint is coming soon). Rustoleum also has the widest variety of colours in chalkboard paint too so you don’t have to choose black. In fact white with dark blue or black writing can look very sophisticated. Chalkboard paint has been doing the rounds for a couple of years now but it’s still a great way to organise the house. It can be painted onto almost any surface and can make short work of organisation.

Here are some ways to use chalkboard paint that you may not have come across before:

On the Front Door

A small square of chalkboard paint on the door you use the most can provide a great place for reminders before you leave the house.

Notes such as, “Phone Charger”, “DVD for Tom” or “Change of clothes for Milly” can make you seem super organised as you never forget anything when leaving the house! Put the notes on as soon as you know you will need to take something extra with you. You can also leave notes for visitors, this is especially fun if you have a business, with “Back in five minutes’ or “Gone Fishing.”

A touch of chalkboard paint on the letter box, or just outside the front door, can be a great way to leave notes for delivery drivers or friends. You can let people know you’re in the garden, or unlikely to hear the bell, or you can give directions on where to leave a parcel. (The latter is only a good idea if you live in a small village with few neighbours!)

On the Freezer

If you have a chest freezer that always needs organising, chalkboard paint could be your saviour. A small stripe across the back can provide the perfect label for letting everyone know where items go.

For example: Meat | Vegetables | Box Meals | Milk

On the Fridge

Chalkboard paint applied neatly on a fridge can make the perfect base for a weekly shopping list. Every time you realise you’ve run out of something in the fridge you simply add the item to the door with chalk.

In the Larder

If you have a pantry, chalkboard paint can also come in handy for letting others in the house know where you like to keep your items. A small note with “Tinned Vegetables” “Flours”  “Sugars” can ensure everyone keeps your pantry just the way you like it.

You can also decant dry food stuffs into jars and add chalkboard paint  instead of labels. It looks more aesthetically pleasing while it’s easy to change if you change the contents.

Cool for School

Chalkboard paint can be used in many ways to help organise school children. You can paint it on the back of a bedroom door and ask the child to fill in their school timetable every week (ensuring they never forget to take the right book and you are always kept in the loop).

You can also use chalkboard paints to create a reward chart for children on their bedroom wall and when they’ve grown out of reward charts, they can use the area to draw.

Do you use chalkboard paint for organisation around your home? Please let us know.
